In today’s world where people travel from one part of the globe to the other literally and virtually, and English has become the lingua franca throughout the world, it has become more and more necessary to achieve a high level of knowledge of the English language.
Not only do businessmen, students or members of the academic community need to be able to use and understand ‘advanced’ English, but common users of the Internet as well. People from all walks of life turn to the Internet for information, be that for their work, out of sheer interest in a particular area, or even in their quest for a new hobby.
The resulting demand for a high level of language achievement and a common means of determining this level has led to a variety of language ability tests. One of the means of describing language level used is the CEFR.
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, abbreviated as CEFR, is a guideline used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages acrossEurope and, increasingly, in other countries ….. In November 2001 a European Union Council Resolution recommended using the CEFR to set up systems of validation of language ability. [There are] six reference levels … [which] are becoming widely accepted as the European standard for grading an individual’s language proficiency. (Adapted from Wikipedia)
Our aim is to help our learners reach the most advanced level (C2) and become proficient users of the English language. The CEFR describes this as “Mastery or proficiency” level.
Our course is designed to help learners of English who have already achieved a certain level of language skills to further their knowledge to such a level that would, practically speaking, be equivalent to that of an educated native speaker. The course is designed along the lines of ‘variety is the spice of life’. Thus, there is no standard format for the lessons. They all have at least one reading passage which is accompanied by different types of exercises. The reading material is, for the most part, from authentic sources, such as newspapers, magazines, novels, etc. There are helpful notes regarding composition writing, vocabulary building, and grammar. The first few lessons do not have listening or speaking exercises as we considered it more helpful and less ‘intimidating’ to start with only the written parts. In the latter part of the course both speaking and listening are included. There is also the “Food for Thought” section, which can provide the ‘spark’ for a discussion or essay, as well as the “For your Perusal” section which can provide further information on topics touched upon in the lessons.
Units are made up of a variety of the following:
Comprehension questions (multiple choice, True/False/Not Given, add the missing paragraphs, where do we find this information, et al.)
Find the words in the text which mean…, glossary of the reading text, tips on vocabulary building [derivatives], multiple choice, et al.
Advanced grammatical points are discussed and exercises are given (e.g. collocations, inversion, et al.)
Notes on different kinds of essays. Many of the examples are authentic essays which have received high scores in exams.
Very Important Notice
As described above, the course has been designed in such a manner so as to give the Instructor the possibility to diagnose each Participant’s weaknesses from his responses to the questions and the exercises. Thus the Instructor can provide individualized advice to help the Participant. In this way, the lesson progresses from a “group lesson” to a “private lesson” with all of the benefits which this kind of learning procedure provides. The constant opportunity for communication via the Internet between Instructors and Participants as well as Participants with other Participants makes for more individual attention along the lines of a private lesson.
The participants who will attend the course and have obtained 50% or more in the final e-test, will get a “Certificate of Attendance” a letter certifying the content of the course issued by DIAN GLOBAL EDUCATION.
